Rethink Your Storage

Built in bookshelves have had their day and free standing bookcases and cabinets are now taking the stage. Everyone can always use more storage. Here are some ideas of how to use stylish pieces of furniture to display everything from linens to collectables.

The great thing about free standing cabinets is that they can be moved between rooms and even houses. Plus, who has the time to call around to find a contractor to come build custom bookcases? Free standing storage is practical, stylish and often more affordable.

Extra Linen Storage

One of my favorite designers, Phoebe Howard, used this gorgeous painted cabinet in an Atlanta pool house to provide extra storage for towels. Love it! Get the look from Sarah Virginia Home with the Farmhouse Bookcase.

Dining Room Storage

This gorgeous Belgian style dining room features two free standing storage cabinets that provide ample room to store plates, dishes, serving platters, etc. Store the pretty things in the upper section and show off your favorite dishes. Use the bottom closed part of the cabinet to stash that "gift" from your mother in law along with all holiday and seasonal serveware. Updated Fireplace and Bookshelfs

Built in bookshelves flanking a fireplace are always nice and symmetrical. However, I am loving free standing bookcases and cabinets on either side of a fireplace. Choose a piece that you absolutely love to float on both sides of your fireplace. It is such a focal point in the room it's an easy way to capture the style and look you are going for with a large piece. High impact and practical storage for your living room. Glam Office Etageres

Get glamorous feminine style in your office with these open shelving units. Transitional and modern, this look is ultra sophisticated and clean. Lacquered furniture, especially in white is so high impact when it is mixed with metallics. I absolutely love gold and white together. It's so classic and chic and to me feels very feminine. Get this look with Gold and White Lacquer Etagere and the Tess Bookshelf.
