No Thing is Better Than the Wrong Thing
Get rid of things in your home that you hate or that don’t work with the look you are trying to achieve. I tell all of my clients, “I’d rather see no painting than a painting that you hate.” Every piece of furniture, art, accessory, lamp etc either moves you closer to the look you are trying to achieve or further away from you the look you are trying to achieve. If you are going for a soft, tonal living room with neutral tones and soothing blues don’t keep a painting on the wall that is high contrast or has reds and golds in it just to fill the space. So when you are working on a room look at everything in it and ask yourself, “Is this piece moving me closer to or further away from the design I want?”. I have too many clients that have pointed to something in their house and said “I absolutely hate that (fill in the blank)” and my immediate response is usually something along the lines of “then let’s get it out right now before we do any thing else.”
Don’t live with something that you hate or that doesn’t work with the look you are trying to achieve just because someone gave it to you or because you spent a lot of money on it at some point in time. You probably spent a lot of money on your prom dress too but that certainly doesn’t mean you need to break it out for the company Christmas party. Having something in your house that you hate is a lot like getting up in the morning and putting on the least flattering outfit you can find every single day. Get rid of the things in your home that you don’t like or that simply don’t work even if you don’t have the budget to replace them right away.
